TikTok cold DMs that get replies: openers you can steal

A TikTok inbox is a strange place. Friends send memes. Brands send collab offers. Bots send "Hey dear, check my profile." Your message lands right in the middle of that, from a name they don't know. You have about one line to prove you're a real person who looked at their account. Here's how to write that line, with examples you can adapt tonight.

    The three-line rule

On TikTok, short wins by a mile. People read DMs on their phone, between videos, with their thumb already moving. Anything that needs scrolling gets skipped.

    1. 1Line one: something specific about them. A video, a comment they left, a product they sell.
    2. 2Line two: why that made you message. One sentence, no pitch deck.
    3. 3Line three: one easy question.

That's it. No intro about your company. No "hope you're well." No link. If it can't fit on one phone screen without scrolling, cut it.

    Openers by niche

The structure stays the same. What changes is the detail you pick up. Here's what that looks like for the buyers who actually live on TikTok.

    DTC and e-commerce founders

Picks up a real videoGets replies

Hey Sam, the behind-the-scenes restock video was great. With the new wholesale line, who's handling the stockist outreach? You or the team?

    Coaches and creators

    Picks up a launchGets replies

Hey Chloe, saw you're opening a new cohort. Are discovery calls still coming mostly from your DMs, or from somewhere else now?

    Local businesses

    Picks up the businessGets replies

Hey Marco, loved the before and after on that kitchen job. Do most of your quotes come from TikTok now or still from Google?

Notice what none of them do: pitch. The goal of the first DM is a reply. You earn the pitch later.

    03

The messages that get you ignored, or flagged

Some DMs fail because they're boring. Others fail because they look like spam to TikTok's filter and never arrive. These do both:

    • A link in the first message. Strangers with links are the textbook spam pattern.
    • The same text sent to fifty people. Identical messages are easy to detect.
    • "I help brands like yours..." Everyone says it, so nobody reads it.
    • A compliment that could apply to anyone. "Love your content!" proves you didn't look.
    • Asking for a call in message one. It's a big yes to ask a stranger for.

Warm up before you write anything

The best TikTok opener starts before the DM. Watch a few of their videos. Like one or two. Leave a real comment on one, something that adds to the conversation instead of "great video!" Then message a day or two later.

When your DM arrives, your name isn't brand new anymore. They might even remember your comment. And your account looks like a normal user who engages, which matters for delivery as much as for the reply.

    05

The follow-up that doesn't feel like chasing

Most people never reply to the first message. Not because they said no, but because a video pulled them away. One or two follow-ups a few days apart will surface replies you'd otherwise lose. Change the angle each time instead of repeating yourself.

Follow-up with a new angleGets replies

No stress if you're slammed. Quick one: is getting more calls booked even a priority this quarter, or is it more about fulfilment right now?

And the moment they reply, stop the sequence. An automatic nudge on top of a real answer is the fastest way to lose a warm lead.

    06

They'll click your profile. Make it worth it.

Here's what happens after a good DM lands: they tap your name to see who you are. If they find an empty account with no photo and no videos, the reply dies right there. If they find a real person who clearly works in their world, the reply gets a lot easier to send.

You don't need a content strategy for this. You need a real photo, a bio that says in one line who you help and how, and ideally two or three short videos that show you know the space. A quick breakdown of a mistake you see clients make is enough. It's the difference between "random stranger" and "someone I should probably answer."

Last thing: reply fast when they answer. A conversation that gets a response within the hour keeps moving. One that waits until tomorrow usually has to start over.

    How Bazooka handles this

What it does on TikTok, step by step.

Bazooka researches the business behind each TikTok account and writes one opener per prospect from what it found, so no two DMs are the same. Before the DM, the account views the profile and likes and comments on 1 to 3 videos. The DM follows on a later day, and held-back DMs are detected and retried.

Follow-ups are timed by the AI up to your limit. When someone replies, the AI closer takes over the conversation, handles objections and books the call. The openers that win get kept, the ones that don't get dropped.

    FAQ

    Questions people ask

How long should a TikTok cold DM be?

Three short lines at most: a specific detail about them, why you messaged, and one easy question. If it needs scrolling on a phone, it's too long.

Should I send a voice note or video in my first DM?

Text first. A voice note from a stranger feels like a lot. Once they reply and the conversation is going, a short voice note can work well.

    How many follow-ups on TikTok?

One or two, a few days apart, each with a fresh angle. Stop the moment they reply.
