Can a business DM people on TikTok? Business accounts, cold messages and what's allowed

Yes, a business can send direct messages on TikTok, but how depends on the route. From the app, a Business account can message anyone whose DM settings allow it, just like a personal account. Through automation tools, a Business account can only reply to people who messaged first, and not at all in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. Cold outreach is possible, but it lives or dies on account history, pace and relevance. Here's the full picture.

Personal, Creator or Business account: which one should DM?

TikTok has two account types that matter here: Personal and Business. Creators usually sit on Personal accounts with creator tools switched on. Business accounts get analytics, a commercial music library, Business Suite, lead forms and access to the Business Messaging API.

For messaging from the app itself, the account type matters less than people think. What decides whether your DM can be sent is the other person's setting: everyone, people they follow back, or no one. A Business account doesn't override that, and neither does verification.

    • Business account: needed for API tools, Message Assistant, auto replies and lead ads. Limited music library.
    • Personal account: full sound library, no API access, same DM rules from the app.
    • Both: can only DM people whose settings allow messages from you.

What can a Business account automate in TikTok DMs?

Inside TikTok Business Suite you get auto messages: a welcome message, keyword replies, suggested questions and chat prompts. They're free and fine for basic questions like opening hours or shipping times.

Beyond that, tools like ManyChat, Chatfuel, Respond.io and SleekFlow plug into the Business Messaging API. The rules are strict: the person must message you first, you get a 48-hour window, and you can send up to 10 messages in it. A public comment on your video doesn't open that window for most accounts.

There's also TikTok Message Assistant, an AI chatbot for verified business accounts in testing across countries including the US and Canada. It answers questions and captures contact details, but again only for people who message you.

Is cold DMing on TikTok against the rules?

Sending a relevant message to someone whose inbox is open is a normal use of the app. What TikTok's rules target is spam and inauthentic behaviour: the same message blasted at scale, fake engagement, and automation that tries to bypass its systems. Its Community Guidelines name cold DM blasters, auto-likers and follow loops directly.

In practice the line looks like this:

    • Fine: a short, specific message to a business owner whose inbox is open, about something they posted.
    • Risky: a new account with no history messaging 50 strangers on day 1.
    • Against the rules: identical texts sent in bulk by a script, follow and unfollow loops, bought engagement.

TikTok doesn't publish a daily DM number. Accounts that go too fast see "maximum reached" errors or, worse, messages that show as sent and never arrive. Those usually clear within a day or two, but the account's reputation takes longer to recover.

Why do business DMs get held back?

This is the part nobody warns you about. TikTok can accept your message, clear the composer, show the bubble in your thread and still not deliver it. A small notice may say the message might violate the Community Guidelines and wasn't sent. On a new account, it happens a lot.

It's not personal. It's how TikTok protects people from spam. A cold account that only messages strangers looks exactly like a spam account. The fix is to stop being a cold account:

    1. 1Spend the first week using TikTok like a person: watch videos in your niche, like, save, comment on a few.
    2. 2Fill the profile: a real photo, a bio that says what you do, 2 or 3 short videos if you can.
    3. 3Engage with each prospect before you message: a like and a real comment on 1 to 3 of their videos.
    4. 4Start with a handful of DMs a day and raise it slowly as replies come back.
    5. 5Never send the same text twice.
    05

Should you DM from your main business account?

For inbound, yes. Your main account is where customers expect to reach you, and an API tool answering them is safe and helpful.

For outbound, think twice. Your main account holds your followers, your content history and maybe your TikTok Shop. If outreach gets it restricted, you lose far more than a few conversations. Most teams that do outbound seriously run it from separate accounts with their own history and their own pace, and keep the brand account for content and inbound.

The first one sounds like a person who watched the video. The second one sounds like the other 40 they got this week, and it carries a link, which is the textbook spam pattern. More openers that work are in TikTok cold DMs that get replies.

    06

What's the safest setup for a business in 2026?

Put the two jobs on two tracks. On your main Business account: post, use Business Suite auto messages or an API tool for replies, and run lead ads if you have budget. On separate, warmed accounts: find people commenting in your niche, engage first, then DM at a human pace.

Keep the replies fast on both. A conversation answered within the hour keeps moving. One that waits until tomorrow usually has to start over.

    How Bazooka handles this

What it does on TikTok, step by step.

Bazooka runs the outbound track and leaves your own account alone. Campaigns run on ready-made TikTok profiles we provide (included from AI Accelerator at $1,897 a month, or add them from $150 a month), each with its own IP and browser, warmed with feed sessions and a slow ramp before the first DM.

Each lead gets a profile view with a like and a short comment on 1 to 3 videos, then a DM on a later day, written from research on the business behind the account. People with no Message button are skipped. Held-back DMs are detected and retried weeks later instead of being counted as sent. Limits stay at 15 to 25 profile views and 12 to 18 DMs a day per account, and the AI closer handles replies until the call is booked.

    FAQ

    Questions people ask

Can a TikTok Business account send DMs?

Yes. From the app it can message anyone whose DM settings allow it. Through automation tools it can only reply to people who messaged first, and the API isn't available to business accounts in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.

Can you DM someone on TikTok who doesn't follow you?

Only if their setting allows messages from everyone. If it's set to people they follow back or no one, you can't start the conversation.

Do I need a Business account to use TikTok DM tools?

Yes. ManyChat, Chatfuel, Respond.io and similar tools only connect to Business accounts through TikTok's Business Messaging API.

Why does my TikTok DM say it wasn't sent?

TikTok held it back as possible spam. It happens most on new accounts that message strangers without any other activity. Warm the account up and engage with the person's videos before you message.

How many DMs can a business send on TikTok per day?

TikTok doesn't publish a number. Start with a few a day on a new account, spread them out, and increase slowly while replies are coming back.

Can I put a link in a TikTok business DM?

You can, but don't in a first message to a stranger. Links from unknown accounts are a classic spam signal. Share it once they reply and ask.
