Cold DMs on Discord in 2026: age checks, message requests and what still lands

If your Discord DMs went quiet this spring, it probably wasn't your copy. In February 2026 Discord announced that every account, new and old, would get a teen experience by default until the person proves they're an adult. One side effect hits outreach directly: messages from people you don't know no longer land where you think they land. Here's what changed, what it means for B2B outreach, and what still works.

    What Discord actually changed

Discord announced the change on February 9, 2026, and started rolling it out globally in early March. Every account is treated as a teen account until it's age-assured, either through a facial age estimate that runs on the device or an ID check handled by a vendor partner.

For teen-default accounts, two settings matter to anyone doing outreach:

    • Direct messages from people they don't know go to a separate request inbox by default.
    • Friend requests from unknown users come with a warning prompt.
    • Only age-assured adults can change either setting.

Discord also runs an age inference model in the background, based on account tenure, device and activity data. So plenty of adults will be recognized without ever scanning their face. But you can't know which of your prospects have been, and a lot of busy founders never bother to change a default.

Where your cold DM lands now

Discord already had a Message Requests folder before any of this. If someone who isn't your friend sends you a DM, Discord may filter it into Message Requests, and you have to accept it before the chat opens. Messages that look like spam go one level deeper, into a Spam folder most people never open.

The default setting filters DMs from non-friends. Put that together with the teen-by-default rollout and the picture is simple: a cold DM from a stranger is now, by default, a request sitting in a side inbox. It's not a notification on their screen.

    03

The friend request is now the real first touch

Once someone accepts your friend request, you're not a stranger anymore. Your DM goes to their normal inbox, with a normal notification, like any message from a friend. That's the whole game on Discord in 2026.

So the order flips. Don't DM, then hope. Send a friend request, wait for the accept, then send the message. The accept is a small yes, and it's the one that gets you into the main inbox.

Keep the request plain. No wall of text before they've even accepted. A request from someone who shares a server with them, with a normal profile and a normal name, looks like a fellow member. That's exactly what it should be.

    04

Your personal account is not a sending machine

One more rule people learn the hard way. Discord's own support page says automating a normal user account outside its official bot API, what the community calls a self-bot, is forbidden and can get the account terminated. Its systems are built to spot spam patterns no matter which server they happen in.

Take that seriously. Your personal Discord is where your community, your customers and your friends know you. Don't run scripts on it, don't blast it, and don't paste the same message into 200 DMs by hand either. Burst behavior looks the same whether a script or a tired human produced it.

If outreach on Discord is part of your pipeline, keep it on separate accounts, keep the pace human, and keep the volume per account low.

    What still gets replies

Discord users are wary of DMs from strangers, and they've earned that. Fake Nitro gifts and fake support staff have trained everyone to ignore the unexpected. What gets through is anything that obviously comes from a real person who shares their world.

The first one names the server you share, mentions something true about them and asks a question they can answer in one line. The second has a link, an emoji rocket and a pitch. Guess which one gets read.

    How Bazooka handles this

What it does on Discord, step by step.

Bazooka collects the members of the Discord servers you're already in, from a channel link, and keeps each member's role, presence and activity. Bots are skipped. Your own Discord friends can be a source too.

The first touch is a plain friend request, with no message attached. The moment it's accepted, the personal DM goes out, written from the server you share and the role they hold there, then their about me, status and activity. If they go quiet, AI follow-ups take over. Limits stay at 15 to 25 friend requests and 12 to 18 DMs a day per account.

It all runs on Discord accounts Bazooka provides, each with its own IP and browser, never your personal account. Every account stays on Discord's live connection, so accepted requests and replies are seen instantly, and the AI closer runs the conversation until the call is on your calendar.

    FAQ

    Questions people ask

Do Discord DMs from strangers still get delivered?

Yes, but by default they're filtered into Message Requests instead of the main inbox, and teen-default accounts can't change that. The recipient has to open that folder and accept before they can reply.

Does an accepted friend request skip Message Requests?

Yes. The Message Requests filter is aimed at DMs from non-friends. Once they accept, you're a friend, and your message arrives like any other.

Can I automate DMs from my own Discord account?

Discord says automating a normal user account outside its bot API is forbidden and can get the account terminated. Don't risk the account your community knows you by.
