What can Instagram DM automation actually do?
Most Instagram DM tools are built on Meta's official messaging API. That API is designed around one idea: the person contacts you first. A comment, a story reply, a DM or a tap on a click-to-message ad opens a window, and inside that window a business can reply freely.

So there are really two jobs hiding under one phrase:
- Inbound automation. Someone comments “GUIDE” on your Reel and gets a DM with the link, a few qualifying questions and a booking link. This is what the official API is great at.
- Outbound conversations. You want to start talking to the owner of a store, an agency or a roofing company who has never heard of you. The official API won't send that first message.
Every tool below is good at one of these. Only some do both.

Which Instagram DM tool should you pick?
ManyChat: the default for comment-to-DM
ManyChat's Pro plan starts around $15 a month for up to 500 contacts and rises as your contact list grows, with AI features as a paid add-on. If your leads come from content, say you post Reels and people comment a keyword, ManyChat is cheap, proven and built exactly for that. It is the better pick than Bazooka if you don't need outbound at all.
Inrō: Instagram-first, with a free plan
Inrō is a Meta Tech Provider on the official Instagram API, with comment-to-DM, an AI agent and DM campaigns. Pro is €12.99 a month and there's a free plan with 100 active contacts. Because it runs on the official API, check what a “campaign” can reach for your use case before you plan cold outreach around it.
A human DM setter
A setter is a person who works your inbox, starts conversations and books calls, usually on a base plus commission. For a high-ticket offer and modest volume, a good setter is hard to beat on judgment. The limits are hours, speed and how many profiles one person can run. More on that in Instagram appointment setters.
Bazooka: outbound and inbound, until the call is booked
Bazooka collects leads, researches each one, warms them up, sends the first DM, runs the back-and-forth with an AI closer and books the call. It runs on Instagram and 7 more channels. It costs more than an inbound bot, so it makes sense when you sell to businesses and need conversations you start, not just replies to people who found you.
Can any tool send cold DMs on Instagram?
Not through the official API. Tools that promise to blast cold DMs usually log in to your profile and fire messages in bulk, and that's how profiles end up with “Try again later”. Instagram doesn't publish a DM limit, and it restricts activity that looks automated, not just high numbers. Our guide to Instagram DM limits has the numbers people actually run at.
What gets profiles blocked looks the same across every tool:
- The same message to dozens of people
- DMs on a perfect interval
- Following and messaging someone seconds apart
- No scrolling, likes or comments around the outreach
- A link in the very first message
What should an Instagram DM tool do after the reply?
This is where tools really differ. A flow builder sends the next scripted message. A real conversation needs someone, or something, that reads the reply and answers it.
Maybe. We tried an agency last year, didn't love it.
Fair. This isn't an agency, it's a system that runs your DMs and books the calls. Want to see it on a quick call?

Ask every vendor: when someone pushes back, what happens? If the answer is “they go to the next step of the flow”, you'll be answering objections by hand.
What should you check before you buy?
- 1Direction. Inbound only, or can it start conversations?
- 2Delivery. Does it warm prospects up before the DM, or send cold into Requests?
- 3Pacing. Does each profile stay at a human volume, around 12 to 18 DMs a day?
- 4Personalisation. Does each DM come from research on the person, or a template?
- 5Conversation. Does AI handle replies and objections, or only keyword triggers?
- 6Booking. Does the call land on your calendar, or does someone still chase a link?
With 3 billion people on Instagram every month, the audience is there. The tool decides whether you reach the right ones without getting your profile blocked.
What it does on Instagram, step by step.
Bazooka collects leads from the followers of accounts your buyers follow, the commenters on posts and Reels in your niche, and your own followers. It reads each bio, their comment, their link in bio and their website. Each prospect gets a profile view with a like and a short comment on 1 to 3 posts, and the personal DM goes out on a later day. Each profile stays at 15 to 25 profile views and 12 to 18 DMs a day, in its own isolated browser with its own IP.
Instagram pushes DMs live and Bazooka listens, including cold replies that land in General. The AI closer answers, handles objections, follows up and books the call on your calendar, and the system learns which openers and sources work for you. From $497 a month for 8 senders on your own profiles, or with ready-made profiles on AI Accelerator and AI Scaler. See how it runs Instagram, the pricing, or get a demo.
Questions people ask
Can you automate Instagram DMs?
Yes. Replies to people who message you, comment, reply to a story or tap a click-to-message ad can be automated through Meta's official API. Starting conversations with people who never contacted you is not something that API does.
Is ManyChat allowed by Instagram?
Yes. ManyChat runs on Meta's official messaging API, which is the approved way to automate replies to people who contact you first.
Can ManyChat send cold DMs?
No. Tools on the official API can message people inside the window that opens when they contact you. They can't send the first message to someone who never interacted with you.
What is the cheapest Instagram DM automation tool?
Inrō has a free plan and Pro at €12.99 a month, and ManyChat Pro starts around $15 a month for up to 500 contacts. Both are built for inbound.
Will DM automation get my Instagram blocked?
Official-API tools replying to inbound messages are low risk. Bulk cold DMs from a logged-in profile are the main cause of blocks, especially identical messages sent fast with no activity around them.
Can AI reply to my Instagram DMs?
Yes. AI can answer, qualify and book, as long as it has context on your offer and the person. The difference between tools is whether AI handles real objections or only keyword triggers.
