What the official API lets you automate
Meta's Instagram messaging API is built around one idea: the person starts it. Automation is supposed to kick in after a user does something, like sending you a DM, replying to your story, commenting on a post (which allows one private reply) or tapping a click-to-message ad.
- Once someone messages you, you have a 24-hour window to respond, and messages inside that window can be promotional.
- After 24 hours you're limited to specific message tags, such as Human Agent for manual support. General promotional follow-ups aren't one of them.
- Spur's guide suggests staying under about 200 messages an hour through the API.
This is what comment-to-DM tools use. Someone comments “GUIDE” on your reel, the tool sends them the link. That's allowed, and it works well for inbound.
Why cold DMs aren't on that list
Look at the rules again. Nothing in them lets an app message a stranger who never interacted with you. As Spur puts it, cold DMs to strangers are not automatable through the official route and never have been.
So when a tool promises mass DMs to a scraped follower list through “the API,” one of two things is going on. It's either not using the official API at all, or it's describing what it does very loosely. Either way, the account doing the sending is the one carrying the risk.
That doesn't mean outbound on Instagram is dead. People still send cold DMs by hand every day, and plenty of them book calls. It means outbound has to look like what a person does: a handful of personal messages, spread through the day, to people you've shown some interest in first. Inbound is where the API shines. Outbound is where behaviour decides whether the account survives.
Where AI genuinely helps
The mistake is thinking AI's job is volume. It isn't. Volume is exactly what gets accounts flagged. AI is useful for the parts that were always too slow to do by hand:
- Reading every prospect properly: bio, website, what they posted, what they commented.
- Writing a first message that's actually different for each person, which also keeps you out of Hidden Requests.
- Answering replies in seconds instead of hours, at 10pm on a Sunday.
- Handling the same five objections consistently, without getting tired or defensive.
- Spotting which openers and audiences get replies, and shifting toward them.
Notice that every one of these makes outreach more human, not less. The goal is a message that sounds like you did your homework, sent at a pace a person could keep up.
Hey Ryan, saw you're launching a wholesale line next to the skincare brand. Who's reaching out to stockists right now, you or someone on the team?
Nothing about that message says “AI.” It says someone read the bio and the website. That's the whole job.
Red flags in any Instagram DM tool
Before you connect anything, ask these questions. If the answers are fuzzy, walk away.
- Does it promise hundreds of cold DMs a day from one account? That's the fastest route to a block.
- Does it send one template with a first name swapped in? Identical messages are a top spam signal.
- Does it want your main account's password to run cold outreach from it?
- Does it follow and message in the same second, with no browsing, liking or warm-up?
- Does it put a link in the first message?
- Does it keep sending after someone replies?

Anyone who's been on Instagram for a week recognises that message instantly. So does the filter.
What it does on Instagram, step by step.
Bazooka doesn't blast from your account. Outreach runs on Instagram accounts we provide, warmed up, each with its own IP and its own isolated browser, doing real feed sessions like a person would. Your own account isn't the one sending.
The AI does the slow, human parts: it collects prospects from the followers of any profile, from post and reel commenters, or from your own followers, skips private profiles, and researches each one down to the link in bio. Every prospect gets a profile view with a like and a short comment on 1 to 3 posts before a personal DM on a later day, at 12 to 18 DMs a day per account. Replies are picked up live, and the AI closer answers, follows up and books the call. It never replies to stories and never sends the same message twice.
Questions people ask
Is it against Instagram's rules to use AI for DMs?
Using AI to write or answer messages isn't the problem. Sending automated cold DMs to strangers at volume through the official API isn't something the API allows, and spam-like behaviour gets any account restricted.
What can I automate safely on my own account?
Inbound flows: replying to people who DM you, story replies, comment-to-DM and click-to-message ads, inside the 24-hour window.
Will Instagram know a message was written by AI?
What gets flagged is behaviour: identical text, bursts, no prior interaction, links in first messages. A personal, researched message sent at a human pace looks like what it is: a real message.
