Why replies matter more than ever
In January 2026 X swapped its old recommendation system for a Grok-based model and published it on GitHub. People have been reading it since, and the consistent finding is that replies are the heaviest signal in the ranking. HackerNoon's walk-through puts substantial replies at the top, above reposts with comment, profile clicks and likes.

Weight of a reply chain where the author engages back, versus a like

Take the exact multiplier with a grain of salt. It's one publisher's reading of the code. But the direction is clear, and it matches what founders see: a good reply that the author answers gets seen by their audience, and it gets seen by the author.
What a reply does for your DM
When you reply to someone's post, three things happen. They get a notification with your name and face. If the reply is good, they often answer or like it. And some of them click your profile to see who you are.
Now your DM isn't from a stranger. It's from the person who had a sharp take on their launch post yesterday. That's the difference between a message that sits in Requests and one that gets opened.
There's a side effect too. A good reply is public, so other founders in the same thread see it. Some of them click through, some follow you, and a few end up in your DMs before you ever message them. One thoughtful reply can warm up more than one lead.
How to reply without being the reply guy
Everyone on X has met the reply guy. Generic praise under every big post, a link in bio, then a DM pitch. People mute him. Don't be him.
- Add something. A number, a counterpoint, a quick story from your own work. “Great post!” is worth nothing.
- Keep it short. One or two lines beats a paragraph in a reply.
- No links and no pitch in public replies. Ever.
- Reply to their posts, not just the big accounts. The prospect is the author, not the audience.
- Space it out. One or two thoughtful replies over a few days beats five in an hour.

We saw the same thing when we moved to team pricing: fewer signups, much bigger deals. Did you change onboarding too?
The sequence, start to finish
- 1Day 1: visit their profile, like a recent post, leave one real reply.
- 2Check that their DMs are open. If not, stop here. Keep replying if they're worth it, but don't force a message.
- 3Day 2 or later: send a short DM that picks up where the reply left off, or opens with what they're building.
- 4If quiet: one follow-up with a new angle a few days later.
- 5If they reply: have a normal conversation. Suggest a call only once there's real interest.
Notice the gap between the reply and the DM. Messaging someone five minutes after your first reply feels like a setup. A day or two later, it feels like a follow-on.
Here's what that follow-on DM can look like when the reply above landed:
Hey Dan, enjoyed the back and forth on your team pricing post. Question on the other side of it: who's finding those bigger accounts for you right now?
It references a real exchange, it doesn't pitch, and it asks a question only he can answer. If he says “me, mostly”, you have a conversation.
And if he never answered your reply at all? That's fine. The reply still did its job: he saw your name. Send the DM anyway, just don't pretend you had a back and forth. Open with what he's building instead.
Your profile is the landing page
Every reply and every DM sends people to your profile. That's where they decide if you're worth answering. Clear bio, real photo, a pinned post that shows you know the space, and recent posts that aren't all promotion.
Premium helps here too. PostEverywhere reports Premium accounts get roughly 10x the reach per post, and verified replies tend to rank higher in the thread. If X is a serious channel for you, the subscription usually pays for itself.
What it does on X, step by step.
This warm-up is built into every X campaign. Bazooka views the lead's profile, likes and leaves a short reply on 1 to 3 of their posts, and uses that visit to check the DM inbox is open. The DM goes out on a later day, only to open inboxes, written from their bio, website and company.
It runs on warmed accounts we provide, each with its own IP and browser, at 15 to 25 profile views and 12 to 18 DMs a day. The system tracks which replies and openers get answered and rewrites itself toward what works for your market.
Questions people ask
Should I reply to someone's posts before DMing them on X?
Yes. A real reply puts your name in front of them and makes the DM feel like a follow-on instead of a cold pitch. Leave a day or two between the reply and the DM.
Do replies really boost reach on X in 2026?
Every public analysis of X's January 2026 open-source algorithm ranks replies as the strongest signal, especially when the author replies back.
How many prospects can I warm up by hand this way?
Realistically a handful a day if the replies are good. Each one needs you to read the post and add something real. That's why teams that do this at volume either hire for it or automate the visit and reply step.
