The rules, in plain English
Meta rolled messaging out in steps. The first version, on July 1, 2025, only worked between Threads followers or people who were mutual followers on Instagram, and only for users 18 and up. In September 2025 it opened up to people who don't follow you. Group chats of up to 50 people followed in October.
- If someone doesn't follow you, your DM lands in their Message Requests folder, not their main inbox.
- Links and media are disabled in message requests. Your Calendly link or case study PDF won't go through.
- There's a limit on how many requests one account can send. Meta doesn't publish the number.
- Messages Meta flags as spam go to a hidden folder most people never open.
- Anyone can switch off requests from people they don't follow in their settings.
That's the whole playing field. It's tighter than Instagram's, and it's built to stop exactly the kind of blast outreach people tried on day one.
One thing works in your favor. If they already follow you, none of this applies. Your message goes straight to their main inbox, links and all. So the people who follow you back, or who found you through your own posts, are the easiest DMs you'll send on Threads.
Why a cold request gets ignored
Put yourself in their seat. They open Threads, see a little request badge, and tap in. There's a name they don't recognize and a message that starts with a pitch. No shared history, no reason to trust it. They leave it there. Not declined, just ignored forever.
The request folder isn't the problem. Being a stranger is. A request from someone whose name they've seen in their replies twice this week gets read. A request from a blank account with a stock photo gets skipped before the first line.
Warm up before you message
The fix is boring and it works. Show up where they already are before you land in their inbox. On Threads that means their posts and their replies.
- 1Read their last few posts. Find one you actually have a thought on.
- 2Like it, and leave a short, real reply. One sentence, specific, no pitch.
- 3Wait. Let a day pass so your name has a chance to register.
- 4Then send the DM, and reference the thing you replied to.
It also helps with the ranking side. Algorithm guides for Threads agree on one thing: replies are the strongest signal on the platform, much stronger than likes. A thoughtful reply on their post gets seen by them and by their audience. A like alone barely registers.
Write for a folder with no links
Since links and media are off in requests, stop trying to send them. Your first message has one job: get a reply. Once they answer, the conversation moves into their main inbox and you can share whatever you need.
Hi! We help agencies scale with AI-powered outbound. Here's a quick 2 min video: [link]. Would love to hop on a call this week!
Hey Maya, liked your reply about clients ghosting after the proposal. Do you follow up yourself or does someone on the team own that?
The second one is short, refers to something real, and ends with a question they can answer in five words. No link, nothing to click, nothing that smells like a funnel.
Pace it like a person
Meta caps requests but doesn't say where the line is. That's on purpose. So don't go looking for it. Send a steady, modest number each day, spread across the day, from an account that has a real profile, real posts and a history of replying to people.
Watch your reply rate more than your send count. If nobody answers, sending more won't help. It just teaches Threads that your requests are the kind people ignore, and that's the pattern that gets accounts limited.
And keep posting. An account that only sends DMs and never shares anything looks like exactly what it is. A few posts a week and a habit of replying to people give every request you send a profile worth clicking.
What it does on Threads, step by step.
Bazooka runs Threads on accounts we provide, each with its own IP and its own browser. Every lead gets a profile view first, with a like and a short comment on 1 to 3 of their posts. The DM goes out on a later day, written from their bio, their link and what they replied to, so it lands as a familiar name, not a stranger.
Each account stays at 15 to 25 profile views and 12 to 18 DMs a day. Replies arrive live, on the same stream as Instagram, and the AI answers, follows up and books the call. Every reply feeds back in, so the openers that get answered become the default.
Questions people ask
Can you DM someone on Threads who doesn't follow you?
Yes, since September 2025. It lands in their Message Requests folder instead of the main inbox, unless they've switched off requests from people they don't follow.
Why won't my link send in a Threads DM?
Links and media are disabled in message requests. Once the person replies, you're in their main inbox and can share links normally.
How many DMs can I send on Threads a day?
Meta says there's a limit on requests but doesn't publish it. Keep daily volume modest, spread it out, and warm up with likes and replies before you message.
