What the citation data actually says
Several studies have tracked which sources AI answer engines cite. The exact numbers move month to month, but the direction is consistent: Reddit is near the top everywhere.

The same study found ChatGPT's top source was Wikipedia at 47.9%, with Reddit at 11.3%. Perplexity leans on Reddit even more: roughly 24% of its citations pointed to Reddit in January 2026, down from a peak of 46.7%, and still more than any other single domain.

Why Reddit? Because it's where real people compare tools, complain about vendors and explain what actually worked, in plain language. That's exactly what an AI wants when someone asks “what's the best X for Y?”
What this means for a B2B company
If a buyer asks an AI “what's a good alternative to [your competitor]?” the answer is built partly from Reddit threads where people discussed that exact question. If you're mentioned there, positively, by real users, you have a shot at being in the answer. If you're absent, you probably won't be.
That turns Reddit into two things at once. A lead source, because the people in those threads have the problem right now. And a reputation layer, because those same threads get quoted to buyers you'll never see.
The mistake is treating the second one like SEO. You can't spam your way into AI answers from Reddit. Mods remove it, users downvote it, and a thread full of people calling you out is the worst possible thing for an AI to find.
The rules you can't skip
Reddit's own guidance draws the line clearly: “It's perfectly fine to be a Redditor with a website, it's not okay to be a website with a Reddit account.” It suggests keeping self-promotion to around 10% of your activity, asks you to disclose your affiliation, and subreddit rules override all of it.
- Answer questions with real, specific help, most of the time without mentioning yourself.
- When your product is genuinely the answer, say so and say you work there.
- Never use sockpuppet accounts to praise yourself. It gets found, and the thread about it lasts forever.
- Respect subreddits that ban promotion completely. Read and learn there instead.
Split the job: public threads and private conversations
The companies doing this well treat Reddit as two separate jobs.
Public: someone from your team, under their own name and with the affiliation disclosed, shows up in the handful of subreddits that matter. They answer questions properly. Over months, that builds the kind of mentions that AI engines pick up. This part is slow and it has to be human.
Private: the people asking and answering in those threads are also prospects today. Reach out to them one to one, about what they wrote, with no pitch in the first message. That's the part that fills your calendar this month.
Hey, saw you in the r/SaaS thread comparing outbound tools. Sounded like the setup time was the dealbreaker for you. Did you end up going with anything?
Keep the two apart. Don't pitch in public, and don't pretend to be neutral in private.
Check what the AI says about you today
Before you change anything, find out where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your buyers ask: “best tool for X,” “alternatives to [competitor],” “is [your company] any good?” Note which sources get cited and which Reddit threads keep coming up.
Those threads are your map. They tell you which subreddits matter in your category, which questions buyers actually ask, and who is already talking about the problem. Read them closely. The people in them are worth reaching privately, and the questions they ask are worth answering publicly, well, the next time they come up.
What it does on Reddit, step by step.
Bazooka runs the private side and deliberately stays out of the public one. It never posts or comments on Reddit. The accounts, provided by Bazooka with their own IP and browser, visit a profile and upvote 1 to 3 posts, and that's the only public activity.
It collects every author and everyone in the threads of the subreddits you pick, or every commenter on a specific post, and each lead keeps the post it came from. The AI writes the Reddit Chat opener from their post, comment, subreddit, karma and account age, only to people who accept chats, at around 12 to 18 chats a day per account. The AI closer handles replies and books the call, and the system keeps learning which threads and openers convert. The public threads stay yours: human, disclosed and honest.
Questions people ask
Does Reddit really influence ChatGPT and Perplexity answers?
It's one of their most cited sources. One study found Reddit at 11.3% of ChatGPT's sources and 21% of Google AI Overview sources, and Perplexity pointed to Reddit in about 24% of citations in January 2026.
Can you pay or spam your way into Reddit-based AI answers?
No. Promotional comments get removed or downvoted, and threads calling out a brand are exactly the kind of content that gets cited. Genuine, disclosed participation over time is the only approach that holds up.
