So, is cold email actually dead?
It's alive. It's just harder. Cold email still books meetings every day for teams that have clean data, a narrow list and real infrastructure. What died is the version where you bought a list of 10,000 emails, loaded one template and waited.
3.43%

Look at that spread. The average sender gets about 3 replies per 100 emails. The best senders get 10 or more. Same channel, three times the result. The gap comes from list quality, deliverability and how specific the first line is, not from some secret template.
So if your cold email is getting 1%, the channel isn't the problem yet. Your setup probably is. And if you're at 5% and still not booking enough calls, the problem is volume and follow-up, which is where social DMs come in.
What changed for cold email?
Three things made cold email harder in the last two years.
- 1Inbox rules got enforced. Since February 2024 Google requires bulk senders to set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, offer one-click unsubscribe and keep spam complaints under 0.3%. Miss that and your mail gets throttled or rejected.
- 2Everyone got the same AI. When every sender writes "I noticed your recent post" with a model, the line stops meaning anything. Filters and buyers both learned the pattern.
- 3Buyers got pickier. Gartner found 73% of B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach. A bad cold email no longer just gets ignored. It costs you the account.

None of this kills cold email. It raises the floor. You now need separate sending domains, warmed inboxes, verified data and real personalization before the first email goes out.
Which one should you use?
Pick by where your buyers answer, not by which one is trending.
- Use cold email when you sell to roles with public work emails, your list is large and verified, and you can run the infrastructure properly.
- Use LinkedIn when you sell to decision-makers, consultants and professional services. Titles and companies are right there on the profile.
- Use Instagram, Facebook or TikTok when your buyers are e-commerce founders, coaches, agencies, trades or local businesses whose owners run things from their phone.
- Use X, Threads, Reddit or Discord when your buyers are founders and builders who talk in public, in replies, communities and servers.
Most B2B teams end up using two or three. The channel decides who sees the first message. What wins after that is the same everywhere: a specific first line, a fast reply, steady follow-ups and an easy way to book. For the LinkedIn-only version of this comparison, read LinkedIn vs cold email.
What does a message that works look like in 2026?
On any channel, the messages that get answered are short, about them and easy to reply to. Here's the difference.
Hi Sarah, I hope this finds you well. I came across your profile and was impressed by your work. We help companies like yours grow revenue with AI. Do you have 30 minutes next week?
Hey Sarah, saw your post about losing 2 SDRs before Q4. We book calls for agencies your size without adding headcount. Worth a quick look?
The second one works as a cold email, a LinkedIn message or an Instagram DM. It points at one real thing, says what you do in one line and asks a small question. That's the whole craft. See more examples in how to do cold outreach.
Should you replace cold email with DMs?
Not if email is working. If you're booking calls at a cost you like, keep going and add a second channel next to it, not instead of it.
Replace it when the signals say so: reply rates under 1% after you've fixed data and copy, domains burning faster than you can warm them, or buyers who simply don't read work email. In those cases the people are still reachable. They're just reading a different inbox.
And benchmark yourself honestly. On LinkedIn, check your acceptance and reply rates against the 2026 LinkedIn reply rate benchmarks. On email, compare against the 3.43% average and the 10.7% top tier. Whichever channel is further from its benchmark is where the easy wins are.
What it does across all 8 channels, step by step.
Bazooka runs outreach where email can't reach: LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, Reddit, Threads and Discord. It collects leads from each channel's own sources, like Sales Navigator searches, post commenters, group members and followers, researches every prospect and starts a personal conversation after a warm-up on that channel, such as a profile view, a like or a comment.
Every profile runs on its own IP in its own isolated browser, inside safe daily limits, and volume grows by adding senders. The AI closer answers replies in real time, handles objections, follows up and books the call onto your calendar. Every message and booked call feeds back in, so the system keeps what works for your market.
Plans start at $497 a month for AI Starter: 8 senders on profiles you bring. AI Accelerator is $1,897 a month with 24 senders and 24 ready-made profiles, and AI Scaler is $3,297 a month with 48 senders and 48 ready-made profiles. 1 sender runs campaigns from 1 profile. Extra senders start at $99 a month and ready-made profiles at $150 a month, cheaper with volume. See pricing or book a demo.
Questions people ask
Is cold email still effective in 2026?
Yes, for teams with verified data, proper infrastructure and specific messages. The average reply rate is 3.43% and the top 10% of senders get over 10.7%, according to Instantly's 2026 benchmarks.
What's a good cold email reply rate?
Around 3.4% is average in 2026. 5.5% puts you in the top quartile and 10% or more is excellent. Below 1% usually means a data, deliverability or targeting problem.
Do social DMs get more replies than cold email?
Usually, per message. Expandi measured a 10.4% reply rate on LinkedIn messages sent after a connection is accepted. But each profile sends far fewer messages a day than an email setup.
Why are my cold emails going to spam?
Most often missing SPF, DKIM or DMARC, a spam complaint rate above 0.3%, unverified addresses that bounce, or identical messages sent at volume. Google enforces these rules for bulk senders.
Should I use cold email and LinkedIn together?
If your buyers use both, yes. Many teams use email for large verified lists and LinkedIn for high-value accounts. Keep the message consistent and don't hit the same person on both the same day.
Is cold email legal?
B2B cold email is legal in many countries when you identify yourself, target relevant business contacts and honour opt-outs, but rules differ by country. Check the rules where your prospects live.
