What is an AI SDR?
A human SDR spends the day on five jobs: building lists, researching accounts, writing outreach, following up and booking meetings for the closers. An AI SDR automates some or all of those.
Most AI SDR tools focus on the first four. They pull contacts from a database, read the company website, write a personalized email or LinkedIn message and run the follow-up sequence. The good ones also sort replies into interested, not now and not a fit.
An AI appointment setter is the part most tools skip: the back-and-forth after the first reply. Answering "what does it cost?", handling "we tried an agency", proposing times and confirming the booking. That's where meetings are won or lost.
Interesting. What does it cost compared to an SDR?
If the software can't answer that within minutes, the lead waits for you. And waiting is expensive.
Why does speed matter so much for appointment setting?
Because interest fades fast. Harvard Business Review studied 1.25 million leads and found that firms who tried to reach a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it as firms who waited even one more hour, and 60 times as likely as those who waited a day.

More likely to qualify a lead when you respond within an hour instead of later

That study was about inbound leads, but the logic holds for a cold prospect who just replied. A positive reply is an inbound lead. A human SDR answers during work hours. An AI appointment setter answers at 11pm on a Sunday, which is often when founders actually clear their inbox.
AI SDR vs human SDR: what does each cost?
A human SDR is more than a salary. You pay base and commission, tools, data, management time and the months before they're productive.
~3 months

And SDRs don't stay long. The Bridge Group puts average tenure under 2 years, so you pay for ramp, get roughly a year and a half of output, and start again.

AI wins on cost, hours and consistency. Humans still win on judgment in complex deals, on phone calls and on relationships with big accounts. The best teams use AI for the volume and keep people on the calls that close.
Do AI SDRs actually work?
Some do. Many disappoint, and for predictable reasons:
- Email only. They push more volume into the channel where inbox rules are strictest, and burn domains doing it.
- Generic personalization. "I saw your company is growing" is not research. Buyers spot it in one line, and Gartner found 73% of B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach.
- No conversation. They send, then dump replies in your inbox. The hardest part, turning "maybe" into a meeting, is still on you.
- No learning. The same openers run in month 6 as in month 1, even after the data shows they don't work.
None of these are AI problems. They're product choices. An AI that reads a prospect's actual posts and website, writes one specific line and answers replies in minutes works. An AI that mail-merges a database at volume doesn't. For what reads as human, see do AI-written LinkedIn messages still get replies.
Hi Mark, I noticed Northwind is growing fast! Our AI tool helps companies like yours scale outreach. Do you have 15 minutes this week?
Hey Mark, saw your post about outbound burning out the team right as you hire 5 SDRs. We run the whole thing with AI so reps only take booked calls. Worth a look?
What should you check before you buy one?
- 1Which channels does it run? If your buyers aren't in email, an email AI SDR won't reach them.
- 2Where does it get leads, and can you point it at your own sources?
- 3Ask to see 10 real first messages it wrote for your market. Would you answer them?
- 4Does it answer replies and book meetings, or only send?
- 5Whose accounts does it send from, and what happens if one is restricted?
- 6Does it learn from your results, or run the same playbook for everyone?
Once calls are booked, the work isn't done. Show rates and follow-ups decide how many become pipeline. We cover that in how to book more sales appointments.
What it does across all 8 channels, step by step.
Bazooka is an AI system that does the SDR job and the appointment setter job together, on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, Reddit, Threads and Discord. It collects leads from each channel's sources, researches every prospect, warms up on the channel and starts a personal conversation, inside safe limits per profile.
When someone replies, the AI closer answers in real time, handles objections, follows up and books the call onto your calendar. It posts AI content on LinkedIn, Facebook and X, connects to Claude and ChatGPT over MCP, and rewrites its own playbook from your results. See it on LinkedIn, Instagram or Facebook.
Plans start at $497 a month for AI Starter: 8 senders on profiles you bring. AI Accelerator is $1,897 a month with 24 senders and 24 ready-made profiles, and AI Scaler is $3,297 a month with 48 senders and 48 ready-made profiles. 1 sender runs campaigns from 1 profile. Extra senders start at $99 a month and ready-made profiles at $150 a month, cheaper with volume. See pricing or book a demo.
Questions people ask
What is an AI SDR?
Software that does a sales development rep's work: finding prospects, researching them, writing and sending outreach and following up. Some also answer replies and book meetings.
What is an AI appointment setter?
AI that runs the conversation after a prospect replies: answers questions, handles objections, proposes times and books the meeting onto your calendar.
How much does an AI SDR cost?
List prices vary widely. AiSDR starts at $250 a month for 200 researched contacts, and Bazooka starts at $497 a month for 8 senders. A human SDR costs salary, commission, tools and about 3 months of ramp.
Will AI replace SDRs?
It's replacing the repetitive parts: lists, research, first messages and follow-ups. People still matter for complex deals, calls and big-account relationships. Most teams combine both.
Do AI SDRs work?
When they research each prospect for real, run on channels your buyers use and answer replies fast, yes. When they mail-merge a database at volume, results drop fast and domains burn.
Can AI book meetings on my calendar?
Yes. An AI appointment setter connected to your calendar can propose open times, confirm the slot and send the invite inside the conversation.
